Feminist buIn the novel The Age of Innocence, by Edith Wharton, both Ellen and Newland ar strongly influenced by the multitude, setting and society around them. In this novel particularly, the char accomplishmenters in all acquit according to societal rules that ein truthone follows. In this time period in New York, having a goodly reputation was on the very top of everyones list. In the novel, Newland was engaged to pound married May, who he did non love. When Ellen Olenska came into town, Newland tardily began to spend a penny feelings for her. Ellen is from England, so she does non kinda get by how to act in New York around all the uptight, judgmental New Yorkers. At first, she breaks some of the rules by sledding to parties that were considered low-class, leaving conversations at the wrongfulness time, and comely doing things that were considered abnormal. Ellen Olenska is viewed by the opposite characters in the beginning of the harbour as someone who does not know how to act in society and that she comes off as a little rude.

Ellen does not mean to do this all because this is not the normal was to act in England; she does not know an better. Since Newland is engaged to May but now has these feelings for Ellen, he is very hesitant to make any moves on Ellen because of society disrespect what he indirect requests. Ultimately, Newland goes on to marry May and not Ellen, only because he does not want to be considered and outcast to society. Newland does however c! ome around to the judgment that New Yorkers be too judgmental and uptight, but unperturbed does not act on his feeling.
