Auden This poem us a musical exercise in which the poet reveals his technical skill by using headphone techniques and figural language to reinforce his translation of a scene. The first stanza requires the stranger - mortal unfamiliar with the island of kingdom of Britain further perhaps acquainted with the specialize of it as a muted and gloomy place - to suffer across at, and re-examine his loss about, Britain, as it is revealed (discovered) for his exercise by the lie cling bounce and flickering on the waves of the sea. The alliteration and accord of -l- straitss (leaping, visible radiation, de brightness level) and of the alveolar -t- and -d- expectants (light, delight, discovers) in the second line, and the fluctuation of abundant vowel sound sounds in leaping and light, together with the repetition of light, creates a quick dancing effect which mimics the reflection of sun off waves.

In two more commands the narrator requires the stranger to forebode and remain quiet so that he can draw close up the sound of the sea, alter in volume, perhaps check to the fixity required, while the mannequin of stresses on wander and river, in the penult line, and on swaying sound of the sea, in the proceed line, unite with the sibilance, conveys an idea of the ever-changing volume of sound flood tide from the sea, and the proceed whispering sound that it makes. The second stanza invites the stranger to grip at the point where a small field ends in a chalk cliff, which drops to a shingle beach below.
